This is a vintage Coalport Pastille Burner, modeled as The Gate House, a finely crafted porcelain incense or pastille burner. The piece bears the "Script Mark," indicating its production between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These burners were designed to mask unpleasant odors in Victorian homes by burning pastilles or incense inside.

History
Coalport Porcelain, founded in the late 18th century in Shropshire, England, was renowned for its high-quality ceramics. Pastille burners became popular as decorative yet functional household items in the Victorian era. The Gate House model exemplifies Coalport's attention to detail and artistic craftsmanship. The "Script Mark" denotes earlier production runs, making it more desirable among collectors.


Very early Coalport porcelain was unmarked, (c1805 and before) and in reality marks were rarely used before 1820.
The Coalport porcelain manufactory was a market leading pottery throughout the 1800s, it produced a staggering range of porcelain products of all shapes and types.

Coalport was named Coalport because of the coal that was transferred from canal boats to river vessels in the Coalbrook Dale area.
